Artist in Residence Program at Fairmont Empress
The Artist in Residence program at Fairmont Empress is captivating guests with live art performances and showcasing the extraordinary talents of local artists in the Greater Victoria region. Artists using various mediums are displaying their work in the hotel’s upper mezzanine throughout the year, providing a culturally enriching experience for all hotel visitors.
Each month, a distinguished local artist will demonstrate their artistic prowess on canvas through live painting sessions. Guests and the community will have the unique opportunity to witness the birth of a masterpiece as the artists create stunning works of art right before their eyes. The artists will share their creative process and inspirations, providing an intimate glimpse into the world of artistry.
Artists will be on-site three times a week during their monthly residency. Their schedules will be posted here at the beginning of each month.
For the month of April, the Artist in Residence is:
Jane Appleby
Jane Appleby is a passionate painter, spending much of her time in nature, admiring and capturing what she calls the “visual music” of the landscape, frequenting local mountains and forests and the shorelines of Galiano Island for inspiration. She works on location or from her Burnaby studio in oils, acrylics and water colours. Initially self-taught, she has received a certificate of Fine Arts Technique at Emily Carr University and also obtained a Biology Degree from Simon Fraser University.

Arden Rose
Arden Rose is a Canadian visual artist whose work evokes a refined sense of light, atmosphere, and place. Working in acrylic and collage, she creates paintings that move between intimate interiors and the natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, each imbued with a quiet, contemplative presence. Inspired by a residency in France, her large-scale interior works draw upon the elegance of 19th-century European spaces. Through a nuanced interplay of light, color, and composition, she reimagines Victorian parlors, Rococo drawing rooms, and neoclassical salons as luminous, dreamlike environments where history and imagination converge.
